The Billboard Isn’t the Bottleneck. Information Is.
Out-of-home advertising is growing worldwide. But for Nigerian businesses, choosing a billboard still requires more than finding a location. Advertisers need clear information about costs, availability, audience and campaign delivery.

Introduction
A business owner in Abuja decides to advertise outdoors. The budget is ready, the target audience is defined, and the campaign objective is clear.
Then the search begins.
Which locations are available? How much does each cost? What does the price include? How does one site compare with another? And how can the advertiser assess whether a location is appropriate for the campaign?
When answers are scattered across different providers, comparing options becomes unnecessarily difficult.
This is an important challenge for an advertising medium that remains relevant to businesses seeking visibility in the physical world.
The solution is not simply more billboards. It is better information, more accessible inventory and a clearer buying process.
Four industry trends help explain why this matters.
1. Out-of-home Advertising is growing Globally
The global out-of-home advertising market continues to attract substantial investment.
According to the World Out of Home Organization’s 2026 Global Out of Home Expenditure Report, global OOH expenditure reached $54.2 billion in 2025, representing a 15% increase over 2024. The organisation forecasts expenditure of $56.4 billion in 2026.
Separately, reporting by AdNews on the WOO findings places Africa’s OOH expenditure at approximately $1.2 billion.
These figures provide important context: outdoor advertising remains a significant component of the global advertising market, while Africa represents a comparatively small share of reported expenditure.
However, global growth does not automatically translate into equivalent growth in Nigeria. Local infrastructure, advertiser budgets, inventory availability, regulation and measurement practices all influence how the market develops.
For Nigerian businesses, the practical question is how to access suitable advertising opportunities and evaluate their value.
Growth creates opportunities. Information helps advertisers make better decisions about them.
2. Nigerian Market Estimates Differ, making context essential
Mordor Intelligence estimates Nigeria’s OOH and DOOH market at approximately $168.21 million in 2026. MarkWide Research estimates $387.6 million for the same year. Methodologies and market definitions differ, so the figures are not directly comparable. The gap does show why advertisers should examine the assumptions behind any headline number.
The same applies when buying advertising. A quoted price means little without knowing what it includes. An audience estimate needs a methodology. Availability should be confirmed before you commit.
3. Digital Advertising is expanding, but Traditional Formats Remain important
Digital out-of-home advertising gives brands the ability to display creative content on electronic screens, with campaign flexibility that static formats cannot always match.
The World Out of Home Organization’s 2026 report, as reported by AdNews, indicates that digital out-of-home is forecast to account for 49% of global OOH expenditure in 2026, overtaking static formats for the first time.
Nigeria’s market presents a different picture.
Mordor Intelligence estimates that traditional OOH accounted for 61.86% of the Nigerian OOH and DOOH market in 2025. This indicates that traditional formats continue to play a substantial role, even as digital advertising develops.
The distinction matters because digital and static billboards serve different campaign requirements.
Digital screens can offer greater creative flexibility and shorter campaign cycles. Static boards can provide sustained visibility over an agreed booking period. The appropriate format depends on the advertiser’s objectives, budget, location and intended audience.
Neither format is automatically superior in every situation.
The infrastructure is catching up. Place Exchange added Nigerian inventory to its network of 100,000 global screens in March 2025, and the Out-of-Home Advertising Association of Nigeria launched the GlobeTrotter marketplace in November 2025 to digitise asset discovery and booking. Mordor Intelligence reports that digital is still only about 4% of Nigerian units, so the shift has barely begun.
A business promoting a short-term event may value the flexibility of digital advertising. A business seeking sustained exposure along a particular route may prefer a static placement.
The important consideration is choosing the format that best serves the campaign.
As the market evolves, advertisers need access to understandable information about both.

4. Billboards attract Attention, but Attention must be Measured Carefully
Outdoor advertising has an important advantage: it places brands in the physical environments where people travel, work, shop and conduct their daily activities.
But how much attention does it actually receive?
A 2020 study conducted by GeoPoll for the Outdoor Advertising Association of Nigeria examined outdoor advertising awareness among 1,000 respondents in Lagos, Abuja and Rivers State.
The study found that more than 80% of respondents said they notice static billboard advertisements, and it ranked outdoor as the second most effective advertising medium in Nigeria, behind radio.
However, the study is from 2020. Its findings should not automatically be treated as a current estimate of consumer behaviour throughout Nigeria.
It is also important to distinguish visibility from effectiveness. Noticing a billboard does not necessarily mean a person remembers the brand, trusts its claims or makes a purchase.
Advertisers should therefore assess campaign performance against their actual objectives.
For some campaigns, that may mean measuring website visits, QR-code scans or enquiries. For others, it may involve brand-awareness research, store visits or sales outcomes, where suitable measurement methods are available.
Audience estimates also need context. Traffic counts, estimated impressions and verified individual exposures are not interchangeable.
A credible advertising decision starts with understanding what the available evidence can—and cannot—tell you.
What smart Buyers should ask before Booking a Billboard
Transparency is not simply about displaying a price. It is about giving buyers enough information to evaluate what they are purchasing.
Nigeria’s Federal Competition and Consumer Protection Commission outlines consumer rights relating to pricing, product information and the provision of factually accurate information.
These principles provide useful context for commercial transparency. However, consumer-protection requirements should not automatically be interpreted as specific legal obligations governing every business-to-business media transaction.
For advertisers, the practical lesson remains straightforward: clarify the terms before committing your budget.
Before booking a billboard, ask these six questions:
1. What is the total campaign cost? Clarify media charges, creative production, printing, installation, taxes and any other applicable fees.
2. What is the minimum booking period? Confirm the campaign duration and the terms for extending or ending it.
3. Who is the intended audience? Ask how the audience has been estimated, what supporting evidence is available and what assumptions underpin the figures.
4. Is the advertising location verified? Confirm the site’s identity, condition, operating status and the provider’s authority to offer the inventory.
5. When can the campaign go live? Establish the approval process, payment requirements, production timelines and expected launch date.
6. What alternatives fit the same budget? Compare other locations and formats before deciding which option best matches your campaign objective.
These questions help advertisers distinguish between a compelling sales presentation and an informed purchasing decision.
A seller who can’t answer these quickly is charging you for uncertainty.
Where SOTOE Billboards Fits
SOTOE Billboards is built around a straightforward idea: businesses should be able to explore outdoor advertising opportunities without having to begin every search from scratch.
Through sotoebillboards.com, advertisers can explore available billboard opportunities across Abuja and Lagos, compare locations and formats, and take the next step towards planning a campaign.
Whether a business is exploring billboard advertising in Abuja and Lagos for the first time or considering a new location for an existing campaign, having options in one place can make the discovery process more manageable.
SOTOE Billboards connects advertisers with third-party advertising inventory. It does not own the billboards listed on its platform. Availability, final terms and campaign details should be confirmed before a booking is finalised.
Our approach is to make advertising opportunities easier to discover while helping businesses understand the options available to them.
Digital LED campaigns have a minimum booking period of two weeks, while static billboard campaigns have a minimum booking period of one month.
For digital screens, an advertisement can go live in 15 minutes after approval, once payment is confirmed and the creative has been vetted. This timeframe applies to digital screens only.
Calls and emails receive a response within 24 hours.
Our objective is not to tell every business which billboard it must buy. It is to help businesses explore their options and make decisions that better align with their objectives and budgets.
Because an effective campaign begins before the advertisement goes live. It begins with choosing the right opportunity.

Better Information. Better Decisions. Greater Visibility.
Outdoor advertising remains an important way for businesses to establish a presence beyond digital channels and reach people in the physical world.
But choosing where to advertise should involve more than selecting the most prominent location or accepting the first available price.
Advertisers deserve clear information. Media providers deserve the opportunity to demonstrate the value of their inventory. And businesses need practical ways to compare options before making a commitment.
At SOTOE Billboards, we believe that making advertising opportunities easier to explore is a meaningful step towards a better buying experience.
Explore available locations, compare advertising formats and find an opportunity that fits your next campaign.
The peacock never hides, and neither should your brand.
